Daniel J. Obrycki is the co-founder of The Applied Finance Group, Ltd. (“AFG”), a research firm that has over 160 money manager and corporate clients and specializes in public and private business valuations. AFG utilizes an objective economic framework that links corporate performance, growth, risk, and competition factors to value firms daily. Public and private corporations use the framework for acquisitions/divestitures, benchmarking and compensation, and to help them understand the relationship between their business plans and creating shareholder wealth. Money managers use AFG’s objective performance measurements and valuations to judge the relative attractiveness of different stocks and to make buy/hold/sell decisions.
At AFG, Daniel has helped developed global a) corporate performance measures that correct for accounting distortions and are comparable across time, firms, and industries, b) models quantifying costs of capital for public and private firms incorporating their size and leverage characteristics, and c) methods of estimating the effects of competition on corporate profitability. He consults daily with money managers/analysts regarding their portfolios/stocks, and has also participated in a variety of projects including cost of capital studies, acquisition and divestment analyses, modeling and valuing corporate strategies, and evaluating/recommending various value-based management systems.
Prior to co-founding AFG, Daniel was the Manager of Research for a portfolio consulting firm, HOLT Value Associates.
In addition, Daniel worked as a Senior Economic Analyst for Amoco Production Company in their domestic and international business units. There he provided extensive economic analyses and valuations on numerous investment opportunities, acquisitions/divestitures, funding arrangements, tax and foreign exchange issues.
Daniel graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Missouri-Rolla with a BS in Geological Engineering and obtained his MBA with a finance specialization from the University of Chicago. He has also been an adjunct professor of finance at DePaul University in Chicago.
